We are a country of firsts and Madame C. Walker is no exception. Born 1867, in Louisiana, she was the 1st female self made millionaire, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Ms. Walker was born to freed slaves and became an orphan at 10 yrs. old. Illiterate and a widow by age twenty, a single mother & poor, she took all she had - $1.50, moved from Missouri to Colorado to start her business. Rarely did woman & more so black woman travel alone, yet she traveled around the country selling her products, her company grew to employing over 1000.
