Mr. Riddle, a 94-year-old Sweetwater, Tenn. man and former pastor spent some 30 months in World War II’s European Theater of Operations. He fought in Sicily; Italy; Normandy, France; the Battle of the Bulge; and the Rhineland area of Germany.
It’s a second Purple Heart the U.S. Army’s bureaucracy is denying him, an award he has requested, and hopes to receive, before he dies.
While serving with Company B, 325th Glider Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division, Mr. Riddle was hurt in a glider crash during Operation Market-Garden, the subject of the book, “A Bridge Too Far.”
In 2010 the Army informed him that a 1973 fire destroyed the military records and that “It is believed the applicant’s records were lost or destroyed.
