The No Child Left Behind law is becoming oppressive with Adequate Yearly Progress targets becoming impossible to meet. It is time to recognize that nearly all districts will fail to meet AYP by next year. Parents and students are growing frustrated and teachers are demoralized. Students are drowning in a sea of standardized tests. We have created a climate that stifles creativity. The school day revolves around testing for accountability ratings. Schools are forced to focus exclusively on testing because of the punitive nature of the system. Accountability should be about a wide range of expectations and issues. There is more to a quality education than a test. Children are suffering under the law. Every child is being left behind.
