The 1973 Helms Amendment prevents the use of US assistance funds from being used to pay for abortions. This includes women who are pregnant from rape and incest, as well as pregnancies that are dangerous to the mother. Women who do not have access to safe places to have abortions may turn to hazardous methods to abort.
-Yearly 21.6 million women attempt to abort with unsafe methods, and of those, 47,000 die as a result of complications.
