Despite what many citizens learned in school, slavery or involuntary servitude still may exist in the United States "as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted." This text in the 13th amendment has had the long-lasting effects of:
* Creating the myth of African-American criminality
* Fostering a contentious relationship between African-Americans and law enforcement
* Keeping poor communities in the poverty cycle
* Engendering the private prison industry to take advantage of the low-cost labor
* Encouraging recidivism over rehabilitation to maintain prison workforces
Close the loophole in the 13th amendment and abolish all slavery and involuntary servitude from the United States.
