Many veterans face long waits to receive their earned VA benefits. Others live geographically distant from VA facilities. Both of these barriers to appropriate care for our nation's veterans can be alleviated by abolishing the brick and mortar VA in favor of a national veterans' insurance system modeled after Medicare. The brick and mortar nature of the VA made sense for many years when there was no organized national healthcare system. However, now there is a robust private national healthcare system which could provide care to our veterans. There are no "Medicare hospitals" as Medicare beneficiaries essentially receive government insurance that allows them to utilize private resources for their healthcare. The same model could be used for veterans benefits.
