Capital punishment has been an element of the criminal justice system since colonial times. It represents a gross violation of human rights, is a cruel form of punishment, is morally repugnant, is unnecessarily expensive, and ineffective at preventing crime. To be among the top nations in the world by execution in the world is a moral outrage. The time has come to eliminate this form of punishment in our country, forever, and to commute all current death sentences to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
