There are clauses in the respective constitutions of Arkansas, Maryland, North Carolina, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas which prohibit people who do not believe in a God or Supreme Being from holding public office.
For example:
North Carolina, Article 6, Section 8: "The following persons shall be disqualified for office: Any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God."
Mississippi, Article 14, Section 265: "No person who denies the existence of a Supreme Being shall hold any office in this state."
These laws are in direct opposition to Article VI of the U.S. Constitution which states that "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." We urge the Obama Administration to abolish these clauses.
