Columbus Day should be abolished, and replaced by a new holiday because Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a national holiday. He did not "discover" America because you cannot discover a continent on which millions of people already live and which was visited by Europeans hundreds of years earlier. Moreover, while Columbus was Governor of the Indies he was reputed to be a tyrant and a sadist, and therefore is not worthy of the hero status that a national holiday confers.
The process of choosing, naming, and designating a new national holiday to replace Columbus Day could be beneficial in the current divisive political climate. Allowing the general public to participate in the process would focus Americans on their common history and shared values.
