Columbus Day commemorates not a milestone in American history but rather the destructive and genocidal legacy of a man who never set foot on mainland North America.
Leif Erikson preceded him to North America by several hundred years, and did so out of the American values of exploration and discovery, rather than the mercenary pursuit of gold. Leif Erikson Day, however, is tragically neglected, established only by annual proclamation at the will of the President and not an official holiday in any state. What Christopher Columbus did on Hispaniola should be regretted by his descendants, rather than celebrated and enshrined as one of America's proudest moments.
We should use the occasion to honor the Icelandic pioneer, Leif Erikson, rather than the morally deficient man that was Columbus.
