The penny, and why it is harmful to the economy;
Pennies are worthless in today’s economy. Times have changed since the penny was first invented. One cannot buy anything with a penny anymore. Furthermore, too much time is wasted on pennies. Through calculations, it is estimated that about 40 seconds per day per person, 4 hours per person per year, equaling to be about 60 dollars per year are wasted on searching for pennies! In addition a penny costs 1.7 cents to produce and only has the purchasing power of 1 cent, thus harming the economy (Roughly 2.2 billion pennies are minted yearly, thus resulting in a loss of 1.54Billion$ in taxpayers money). Finally, studies have proven that the loss of the penny would not cause inflation or prices to go up. Overall the penny is harmful to economy.
