Abolish draft registration. Selective Service wastes taxpayer millions without improving military readiness. Cut it!

Created by A.S. on December 20, 2012

The Selective Service bureaucracy should be abolished.

The Selective Service was (re)established by President Carter. It requires all young men, but not women, to register for a draft that does not exist. For over 30 years Selective Service has annually consumed millions of taxpayer dollars; made criminals of those who did not comply; enshrined gender discrimination; and (because of the Boland Amendment and its various state-sponsored analogues) prevented thousands of people from entering public service.

These costs could make sense if draft registation helped with military readiness. But it does not. Ours, for good reasons, is a volunteer military -- the world's best.

In the current "age of austerity" this is exactly the type of Federal program that should be eliminated.
