We need to abolish the electoral college for the sake of democracy. The elections of 1876, 1888 and 2000 produced an Electoral College winner who did not receive the plurality of the nationwide popular vote. Its obvious that voter turnout today is largely insignificant due to entrenched political party domination in most states. The Electoral College decreases the advantage a political party or campaign might gain for encouraging voters to turn out. Political candidates pay the most attention to states without a clear favorite and the Electoral College gives disproportionate power to those states' interests. Finally, the winner-take-all manner of allocating a state's electors generally decreases the importance of minor parties.
