The electoral college was created at a time when transportation and news were such that only those in heavily populated urban areas had the knowledge and ability to vote. For the past 100 years, those circumstances have largely disappeared. Rural citizens can readily listen to enough news to form their own opinions about candidates, and abundant local polling places have given all Americans the opportunity to vote. Popular vote now seems to be a more accurate method of determining winning candidates.
