The electoral college is an outdated tradition that discourages people from voting and distorts the votes that are cast. In states where there is a strong majority that strongly identify with one party there is little motivation for the minority to participate as there is no partial votes in the electoral college. Further more two presidents have recently been elected despite losing the popular vote.
