In 2000, 50,999,897 citizens voted for Vice President Al Gore. Despite beating his opponent by 543,895 votes, George W. Bush was sworn-in as the 43rd president on 2001. In the year 2016, 65,844,954 citizens voted for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Once again, the candidate who won the popular vote, in this case by more than 2.8 million votes, will not take office as President.
The voices of millions of American people have been unfairly dismissed due to the archaic electoral college system. We have been robbed of our choice for Commander-in-Chief two times in the past two decades. It is clear that the electoral college does not serve the people. Given these circumstances, our lawmakers must take steps to permanently put an end to the electoral college system as quickly as possible.
