The Electoral College, as laid out in the Constitution, was designed primarily to address the limited technology of the late 1700s. Communication and transportation were slow, with transit from the extents of the Colonies to Philadelphia taking as long as six weeks. The Elector system was designed, more than anything else, to deal with these limitations. It was an unfortunate side effect that it laid the groundwork for negative effects on the modern election process.
These technological limitations no longer exist.
Unlike members of Congress, who represent a subdivision of the USA, the President represents a single district, that being the entire Nation; therefore, an amendment to the Constitution to abolish the Electoral College and elect our President by popular vote only is proposed.
