Currently, many Americans feel that their votes in presidential elections do not matter, given that most states consistently have a majority of voters who are either Republican or Democrat. Attaining an electoral college majority, and thus election of a president, depends only on voter opinions in a handful of states.
Abolishing the Electoral College will prevent candidates who fail to receive the majority of the popular vote from attaining office.
