The electoral college was initially in place to keep uneducated voters from making uneducated decisions, now that many voters don't pay attention to campaigns. The electoral college influences presidential candidates in particular to pander towards specific states with high electoral votes first, causing in many cases a duplicity that would be more difficult to come by if every vote had a direct influence over the outcomes.
