1) Americans don't directly elect their presidents, the electoral college does, people who are not beholden to the people and are unelected.
2) Each state regardless of how populous receives a default number of electoral college members. Which in effect pretending more people live where the do not, and less where they do live. The more populous states lack votes the should have deciding the election, and less populous states have more votes then they should have.
3) The system for deciding who gets the electoral college votes is winner take all. No matter how small the majority the entire state gives its votes away. Disenfranchising the minority party in a heavily partisan state.
