There have now been four presidential elections in US history, two of them within the confines of this very young century, where the mathematics of the electoral college have resulted in the candidate with the fewer votes going on to win the election overall.
The electoral college has some value in the form of preventing regional dominance, and giving more power to those who live in less populous, often more rural states. However, these arguments cannot override the fact that this system allows for the 'loser' of the election to win, thus far approximately 7% of the time.
For the good of American democracy in the long term, the electoral college should be abandoned, and replaced with a simple, country-wide, direct vote, where the presidential candidate with the most votes wins.
