Since its establishment the Electoral College has functioned as an indirect and confusing way of electing the President of the United States. Worse still it has failed in its duty to serve the will of the people. Currently winning states is the only thing that matters effectively ignoring the individual vote in a winner take all system. This leaves us with states that will always vote one way negating the vote of any opposition party within them.
The president should be elected based on the popular vote which shows what the American people actually voted for. Five times presidents have won the white house without being voted in by a majority of citizens. These include John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, George W. Bush, and most recently Donald J. Trump.
