The embargo on the country of Cuba is a failed policy and should be lifted. It was designed to try and topple the communist government in Cuba, but to this day that has not happened. If these sanctions have not been able to topple over the government in the past 50 years, it's not going to happen. Secondly the embargo is harmful to the economy of the United States. The US Chamber of Commerce estimates that the United States loses about $1.2 billion annually in potential exports. Texas A&M University has also calculated that lifting the embargo could create as many as 6,000 jobs in the US. Finally if we are willing to trade with countries such as China, Venezuela and Vietnam which have plenty of human rights abuses, why can't we trade with Cuba?
