Trains are required to blare their horn (~96dB) at least four times per intersection. Although the FRA say that this regulation "saves lives", citing one instance in Florida where they removed the regulation and deaths increased, there are many states in which enforcing this regulation has NO NOTICEABLE IMPACT on deaths by train (take my state of Pennsylvania, for example, comparing the number of deaths before and after the regulation was imposed in 2005), not to mention the percentage of those who have been killed by trains is around .00000237% of the general population (PA avg of 30 people per year, in a highly-industrialised state, with 12.7 million people).
We are subjecting all those within a five-mile radius of ANY railroad crossing to a plaguing of noise at all hours of the night.
