English class should not be mandatory past ninth grade in any high school. The 'skills' taught in English classes grades ten through twelve are not applicable in the slightest in the real world. What the public most likely thinks is that reading and writing skills are being taught. This could not be further from the truth. The only work being done in these classes is literary analysis. This is not an essential skill in all but a few professions. If English class was not mandatory, students could spend more time taking classes that were relevant to their desired professions. Furthermore, students could concentrate better on classes more relevant to their desired professions, as English classes often make up the bulk of a student's workload.
