abolish mandatory Selective Service System "Draft" registration.

Created by S.D. on March 08, 2013

The Selective Service System requires all US resident males between the ages of 18 and 26 (including those undocumented and illegally present) to register with the government for potential compulsory military service - "the draft." While the nation's previous draft had been abolished by President Nixon, the current system was created by proclamation by President Carter as a response to the Soviet military invasion of Afghanistan. (The Soviet Union was not fazed.) Though several notable Americans, including President Reagan, have expressed concerns about the draft registration - ranging from cost and inequitable enforcement to the belief patriots would volunteer and need not be drafted - the political environment has prevented any changes. Mandatory registration ought to be abolished.
