Federal law currently states that any state with a drinking age under 21 will lose 10% of their federal highway funding. This law was put into effect primarily by the heavy lobbying of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Drunk driving, however, should be solved with education, enforcement, and bar limits for all citizens; not by generalized age restrictions. Far too many 18-20 year olds are participating in dangerous binge drinking without regulation, because current laws make alcohol impossible to obtain in a safe and monitored environment. Young people are going to drink regardless, so we need to regulate safe consumption, rather than forcing them to discreetly binge. These adults can fight and die for our country, and should be able to responsibly enjoy a drink with good company.
