Christopher Columbus is a celebrated individual in the United States, but I believe this is largely out of habit and willingness to overlook the crimes of our ancestors for the sake of celebration. Celebrating this man insults Native Americans, Black Americans, Women, and decent human beings.
The atrocities committed by Christopher Columbus and his direct relatives under his supervision are well documented. Among these horrific acts you can find admission to and often the defense of slavery, mass killings, sex trade with girls as young as age 9, and the introduction of the African Slave Trade to the Americas. Meanwhile, Natives are given the day after Thanksgiving, so no one is educated about the people living in America the longest. No one is perfect, but this is nothing to celebrate.
