Pennies and nickels are nothing, but a cost to society.
They cost more to produce than they are worth.
They are too cumbersome to deal with for any machine to accept them.
The seconds spend to pay in exact change is worth more than the change spend.
While the money gained is a small amount compared to the full budget of the US government, it is money gained with no downside – only pros, no cons.
Other countries that have dropped the one cent and prices did not increase, neither did charitable donations decrease.
Overseas US military bases have already taken the first step and abolished the penny.
