Abolish pennies.

Created by B.E. on December 25, 2013

Pennies used to have a function: help people buy stuff. This isn't the case anymore. To start, they have no buying power. In fact, right before the US abolished the half-cent coin in 1857, that coin had more buying power than today's dime currently has. Not only that, pennies cost more than they are worth to make, persuading some people to melt older pennies to obtain the copper which is worth more than the penny itself. To attempt to solve this problem, the American government made melting coins illegal. This solves nothing as pennies are still a drag to our economy. It makes more sense to get rid of them and round up prices, which won't have any negative effects. We've already done this once in history with the half-cent coin. It makes more sense to do this to the penny.
