Pennies cost more to make than they are worth (about 2 cents per penny). Nobody wants them in their pocket. There is better use for copper (which is why people are illegally melting down pennies). There is very little use for pennies (cannot be used in vending machines, toll booths, and if you start counting pennies at the cash register...). The gain and loss of rounding to the nearest nickel would balance out. It's time we put our little copper friends to rest.
