The time has come to stop minting pennies. One cent coins have long cost the mint more than their face value to produce. Meanwhile inflation has long stripped them of any real monetary value.
In addition to the loss of value during the minting process many economists contend that pennies are actually a drag on the economy.
Other countries have ceased production of one cent coins with no detriment to the economy. Prices did not rise, neither did charitable contributions drop. It is time for us to do the same and drop the penny.
