Americans are being killed by firearms at a rate in excess of 14,000 men, women and children per year. The modern countries of the world suffer a fraction of the death rate that Americans do, primarily because of the lack of firearms available to the general public.
The Second Amendment speaks to militias to mitigate a tyrannical government, which was appropriate in the eighteenth century, but the militia concept has no value now.
None of our annual firearm deaths involve militias or are caused by our government, the killings are performed in the heat of anger. With today's technically advanced and readily available firearms, what may have been a heated argument escalates into a chaotic shootout with innocent bodies all around.
