Every day there are people who go to a restaurant knowing full well the employee makes $2 an hour, the employee offers impeccable service, and the patron decides to drop a business card blaming the president for tax increases or blaming the server's low class, blaming religion, or otherwise denying the server what is essentially a mandatory compensation. Pretty much the rest of the civilized world does not do tipping the way we do and disproves the notion that tipping is needed to encourage good service. At a time when even minimum wage is not enough to live on, are we really going to argue that $2 is enough? While some people can make $100 a day or more, that is the exception and it shouldn't be up to the customer whether the employee deserves compensation.
