Patents are an antiquated concept initially intended to protect the individual entrepreneur against the large corporation. This is no longer the case and with the patenting of basic math (software algorithms), naturally occurring sequences (genes), and overly obvious and simple processes (see the Amazon one click shopping patent and many others) the patent system has become a tool of big industry to restrict advancement and innovation while they squeeze every drop of profit out of the current product line without having to compete with improved products. The patent system is no longer a boon and instead is the bane of research, advancement, and innovation and only serves as a tool for large companies to suppress competition.
