The United States was the first country to call for a global ban on anti-personnel landmines in 1994. An American, Jody Williams, led the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and received a Nobel Peace Prize for her work. To date, 161 countries have banned all use of anti-personnel landmines by ratifying or acceding to the Mine Ban Treaty, but not the United States. The United States is already the global leader in funding humanitarian mine action; it should now reclaim its position as a moral leader by banning these cruel and inhumane weapons and encouraging other countries to do the same.
