The inhabitants of the Falkland Islands go to the polls on March 10-11. They will be asked, “Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?” It is a foregone conclusion that the vote will be a resounding "Yes".
The United States should unequivocally recognize the results of this vote and acknowledge the Falkland Islanders right to self determination. By doing so, we will support the democratic principles that our country stands for and give credence to the "special relationship" we have with the UK.
