My grandparents were among the "lucky" Armenians that fled Armenia and emigrated to the United Staes. An estimated 1.6 million Armenians were slaughtered at the hands of the Turks to take their land.
After nearly a century, all involved in the genocide are dead. We, as a nation, must recognize this atrocity and never forget that ethnic "cleansing", or whatever name you want to use, must be remembered.
For a number of years, France has insisted that Turkey's inclusion into the European Union be predicated on this recognition. As a close friend and ally of France, we need to support them in this vital issue.
I do not, and have never recommended any kind of restitution by the Turkish government. I only ask that they acknowledge this dark chapter in their history.
