On April 24th, 2014, a lawsuit was filed by the Republic of the Marshall Islands against the United States and other nations for failing to dismantle their arsenals of nuclear weapons, breaching the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The U.S. government has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, claiming their actions are “justifiable”.
The U.S. government should do more to honor their obligations under the treaty, and should acknowledge those bringing the suit, the Marshallese, who have been subject to and still feel the profoundly devastating effects of nuclear testing.
