On the November 6th Puerto Rican referendum 54% were unhappy with their current political status. Of those who answered the question asking what status they preferred, 61.13% chose statehood. We should give the people what they want. A citizen of a state enjoys the full rights and privileges granted in the U.S. Constitution, whereas citizens in U.S. territories do not. In their current political status, an unincorporated territory, they can't vote in national elections. That is very unfair. It is very hypocritical that we believe in choosing our leaders, but in some places like Puerto Rico and Guam, they can't vote and they just accept a new leader in government without any of their opinions. They also have no voting representation in congress. Yet they have to accept Congress' laws.
