Since 1898, Puerto Rico has been a non-incorporated territory of the United States. In 1917, Puerto Ricans were granted American Citizenship and since then everyone born in Puerto Rico is American by birthright.
A two question plebiscite was held to determine the future of the political status. In the first question, voters were asked if they agreed with the present form of territorial status. The second question asked voters to choose among the three constitutionally viable alternatives to the current status which are Statehood, Independence and Sovereign Free Associated State.
With a turnout of over 1.8 million (77.6%), 53.97% expressed their rejection to the current territorial status. Of the viable alternatives to the current status, Statehood was favored with 61.16% of the votes.
