Add barley and rye to the list of allergens in the Food Labeling and Consumer Protection Act.

Created by A.O. on August 23, 2013

Those with Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance must adhere to a gluten free diet. This includes avoiding any wheat, barley or rye products. Any product made from wheat is required by the Food Labeling and Consumer Protection Act to be disclosed in the ingredients list or allergy warning, but barley and rye are not required to be disclosed.

Many products contain ingredients from barley or rye, but don't mention barley or rye on the label. Examples are malt syrup or yeast extract-both can be made from barley, but this is not required to be disclosed on the label. Adding barley and rye to the list of allergens in the Food Labeling and Consumer Protection Act is simple and would fix this problem.
