Borderline Personality Disorder is a serious mental illness that affects 1.6% (or more) of the population. It is one of the most common personality disorders. Despite it being common, Borderline Personality Disorder (and other personality disorders on Axis II) is not reimbursable by health insurance companies. Often times, this puts mental healthcare providers in a position to have to give the client a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder to be able to be reimbursed.
Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder are two different diagnoses with two different treatments. If labeled and treated correctly, people with Borderline Personality Disorder can recover and lead normal lives.
