The polls clearly indicate that there's a consensus about background checks to screen who gets to buy a gun. Even in the senate, the vote had an 8 lead majority but despite all that the watered down bill failed to pass.
The NRA had the chance to participate in the process of tackling gun violence, but it is quite clear that they're only interested in maximizing gun sales and will only offer any solution that has to do with the use of more guns.
They will also rile up a crowd and stir up unfounded fear of the government wanting to take away guns to declaw the people so they'll be more susceptible to the government's whims, which serves their real purpose of increasing gun profits.
In short declare this NRA and alike as part of the problem.
