Add PC, AS, SAN, and ABS to plastic recycling codes

Created by J.M. on January 18, 2014

Plastic recycling codes include PET (1), HDPE (2), PVC (3), LDPE (4), PP (5), PS (6), and All Others (7). 7 includes mixed, Polycarbonate (PC), ABS, AS, SAN, and so on.

Polycarbonate is dangerous: old polycarbonate contained the safe BPA compound, but new "BPA Free" Polycarbonate plastic contains BPS--having the same toxic effect as BPA at a fraction of the concentration. BPA leeched at levels well below what could cause toxic effect, but BPS in the new "BPA Free" plastics leeches at 20 times the rate of BPA.

PC is used in baby bottles labeled 7.

I propose to add codes for PC (8), AS (9), SAN (10), ABS (11), and vegetable-sourced PLA (12), retaining 7 for "mixed and all else". Knowing that a plastic is not Polycarbonate is now important because of dangerous "BPA Free" polycarbonate.
