In today's economy and global environment, an educated nation is a competitive one. Community colleges play a key role in providing access to higher education and preparing students. Americans are increasingly recognizing the benefit of starting their higher education at an affordable institution - often finding a quality education at a greatly reduced cost. For many students, community colleges are the first step before moving on to four year institutions. Preparation for the next step is an important part of the mission, and transfer is a large part of the equation. Unfortunately, when a student chooses to transfer prior to graduating, it is labeled as attrition and effectively looks like the institution has failed. This must be changed so that success rates can be reflected properly.
