The perpetuation of the War on Drugs, the increasing number of for-profit prisons, and the increase in draconian police measures and sentencing are all contributing to an American prison population that is the largest in the world. As of 2010, there were well over 2 million citizens incarcerated with over 7 million people under the supervision of correctional authorities (Bureau of Justice statistics). This is too many. It is harmful to our country, our culture, and the future of our nation. This is a problem that disproportionately affects the weak and marginalized. It is time for this to be addressed by the highest levels of power instead of the constant talking points about rich people, corporations, and abortions. How about some justice in our justice system.
