On January 19, news reports surfaced of fighting between Islamist extremists and Kurdish militants in the town of Serekaniye, Syria (Ras Al Ain in Arabic). The Islamists have deliberately targeted civilians and are currently holding civilians hostage. Eye witnesses on the Turkish side of the border reported seeing Turkish border agents allowing Islamist fighters to cross the border freely. Kurdish militants on the ground are claiming that the Islamist groups, Al-Nusra Front and Ghuraba Al-Sham, are getting their weapons and support from the Turkish government. Allowing terrorists to move about freely or any other form of support would clearly qualify Turkey, a NATO ally, as a state sponsor of terror. It's important that the Obama administration make its position clear on this issue.
