Over half of America's nuclear power plants do not meet current safety standards and are allowed to continue running, even after the disaster in Japan. Since 1998, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has not been consistently enforcing safety standards for America's nuclear power reactors, leading to many near misses. Congress has previously threatened to cut the NRC budget for attempting to enforce safety standards due to lobbying by the nuclear power industry.
Rules set forth by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission are put in place as minimum standards to prevent harmful radiation exposure to humans, animals and environment.
Please support the NRC in their enforcement of existing safety regulations, and raise standards for currently operating plants to avoid future disasters.
