A number of problems threaten the general aviation industry which accounted for 5.2% of the U.S. GDP in 2009.
Unfortunately a significant increase in the cost of aviation since the 1970's plus decreased interest in the field in general has resulted in a threat to a major American industry. General Aviation also faces a major energy crisis as leaded aviation fuel is no longer a sustainable or environmentally friendly option.
Without reformation by both the government, the aviation industry itself, and renewed interest in aviation the potential economic impact could be devastating.
